AI News: Tech Giants Plots To End NVIDIA AI Software Dominance

Major tech giants in the United States are ganging up to end the Nvidia AI dominance, especially as it concerns the software that has helped it maintain monopoly over the past 20 years.

Alternative Solution to NVIDIA AI Software Dominance

According to a Reuters report, tech giants like Google, Intel, and QualCOMM are looking to create alternative software that will see the powers wrestled down from NVIDIA AI in the long term. The trio are reportedly forming a coalition under the umbrella of the UXL Foundation.

This startup aims to build on the initial software created by Intel dubbed OneAPI. The plan is to create new softwares that can power different types of AI accelerator chips. The new venture is slated to be open sourced and per the Reuters report, the goal is to ensure it can run on any chip machine despite the differences in chips and hardware from the contributing tech giants.

“It’s about specifically – in the context of machine learning frameworks – how do we create an open ecosystem, and promote productivity and choice in hardware,” Google’s director and chief technologist of high-performance computing, Bill Hugo said in an interview with Reuters.

When NVIDIA made its emergence in 1993, it came as an underdog to chip giants like Intel. Today, NVIDIA is ranked among the biggest companies in the world, especially as its market capitalization crossed the $2 trillion benchmark earlier this year.

One of its secret weapons is the NVIDIA CUDA Software platform that empowers the creation of AI and other applications. This software is heavily relied upon by OpenAI and Microsoft among other entities that build AI solutions. In the long term, the coalition being formed hopes to break this hegemony.

NVIDIA is Not Sitting on the Sidelines

Since OpenAI released ChatGPT, there has been a renewed push to compete in the AI scene. Besides ChatGPT, Google released Bard which it later renamed Gemini, and a host of other innovative applications.

Considering the trend, NVIDIA stepped up its AI game by releasing Chat With RTX as reported earlier by Coingape. The Chat With RTX is a tailored application to work in offline settings relative to other versions.

Almost every tech giant is setting up their game to launch new AI applications. From the new video generation engine Sora from OpenAI to the first software engineer from Devine, the AI scene is booming and innovators want to limit NVIDIA’s advantage in the space.
